High-speed Modem Blues

Recently, my near-decade old 2400b modem burned itself out after years of
faithful service. I immediately went out and bought myself a USR Sportster 14.4
v32bis Faxmodem. It works great, there's just one teensy problem.

When I call at speeds over 2400, the modem picks up, grabs carrier, but
Proterm (I have 3.0) does not acknowledge a connection. I have to manually hit
Option-T to toggle online. Hangup is fine, though.

I'm using the Generic 9600 Baud Modem Driver and its default init string in
Proterm. I am running on a ROM 3 GS with five megs of memory and System 6.0.1.

My modem settings in the Control Panel are:

Line Length: Unlimited
Delete First LF After CR: No
Add LF After CR: No
Echo: Yes
Buffer: No
Baud: 19200
Data/Stop Bits: 8/1
Parity: None
DCD Handshaking: No
DSR/DTR Handshaking: No
XON/XOFF Handshaking: No
