Hi folks,

(yay!) Unfortunately the PowerMac 8500 I used to have to serve as a
file server for the thing died many years ago and the oldest mac I
currently have is an iMac G3. I am trying to get the IIGS to see the
network shares on the iMac but so far I've not had any luck. I have
one of the Ansante Localtalk to Ethernet bridge devices which I used
to use with the PowerMac and the GS so I know that all works but so
far I can't seem to get the GS to see the G3 or find out if it is even
possible to use appleshare between these 2 machines.

Anecdotally, some of the bridge devices seem problematic for networking Apple 2 clients. I suspect you may have to configure it as a router instead of a bridge in order to get things to properly seed. Personally, I've never had any success with Asante devices under any circumstances. I'm currently using a Gatorbox CS in router mode to let my various Apple 2e and IIgs machines get at a Linux fileserver running netatalk.

I know this arrangement has "just worked" for a number of folks and simply refuses to work for others (hi, Tony!).

Unfortunately, I'm not a networking guru and also lack the time for a low-level analysis of the situations where it fails.

I realize this isn't much help and wish I had more advice to offer!
