Scott, I asked a similar question in a thread a couple months ago,
with several informative replies. In short, it won't work with OSX.
It will(should) work with OS7,8,9. Are you sure you are actually
booting the G3 in os9? (The osx "classic" boot won't work. It has to
be a boot into real os9 - no osx involved.) And the stinger is it
should be a localtalk
connection thru serial port. I don't know if a usb/serial converter
like keyspan's will work. My suggestion is to buy an old powerpc with
real serial ports. My setup is IIGS<-localtalk->PPC6500/os9/
localtalkbridge<-ethernet->iMacG4/osx10.4 . A transfer is 2-step. GS
transfer to/from os9 using appleshare+localtalk cabling. Then
transfer to/from Mac/os9 and iMac/osx using appleshare over ethernet.
GS to iMac will NOT work. I have installed netatalk on my osx10.4
machine but still no luck using appleshare on the GS with the osx
machine.
The appleshare21h cdev probably means you are (correctly) using the
one modified by Marsha? to enable cleartext passwords on the GS os6.1.
Good luck and best wishes, --Steve
