Hi folks,
I dug out my old Apple 2gs and despite being in storage for several
years the clock was still accurate and the hard drive is still working
(yay!) Unfortunately the PowerMac 8500 I used to have to serve as a
file server for the thing died many years ago and the oldest mac I
currently have is an iMac G3. I am trying to get the IIGS to see the
network shares on the iMac but so far I've not had any luck. I have
one of the Ansante Localtalk to Ethernet bridge devices which I used
to use with the PowerMac and the GS so I know that all works but so
far I can't seem to get the GS to see the G3 or find out if it is even
possible to use appleshare between these 2 machines. The G3 can run
Mac OS 9.1 to 10.4 and if I read the google right OS X is out of the
running so I've tried sticking with OS 9 but still no luck. The
machine currently is running 9.2.2 and the restore disk I have has 9.1
on it so I could try with 9.1 but I haven't done this yet. Here's what
I've tried so far:
- Enabled file sharing in the G3
- Installed the Localtalk bridge software on the G3 (Do I even need
this since the G3 doesn't have the traditional serial ports)
- Appletalk is active on the ethernet port on the G3
On the GS I have the Appleshare (the control panel calls itself
AppleShare21H for some reason) still installed that did work with the
old PowerMac. The control panel on the GS stay resolutely blank. :(
Any ideas? Can I even make this work with these 2 machines? My only
other option to get software to the GS is by using Proterm and even
though 3.1 supports fast baud rates anything above 19200 has too many
errors to be useful.
