Upgrading old IIe?

      I have an old Apple IIe, that is an unenhanced IIe. I believe my
 IIe is one of the earlier models, since the mfd. date is mid-1984, and
all of the chips, including the 6502 have 1984 date codes. All of the
chips, including the 6502A, are socketed and not soldered directly to
the board. 
      My question is, can I upgrade this machine to an enhanced IIe, or
would it be better to buy a newer enhanced IIe? Would it be possible to
replace the old 6502A proccessor with the 65C02?
      Any help would be appreciated, since I am new to the Apple2 world.
I just bought the IIe and a 1981-vintage II+ this summer, with two disk 
drives and a joystick for the grand total of $30. I felt it would be
nice to work with some vintage computer equipment, since my 486 is wearing
thin!
