  What you want to do is very easily done -- and no, you are not out of your
mind!
 
        On the controller card of a hard drive, you should find three rows of
jumper pins (2 pins each) located near the 50-pin SCSI connector.  The pins are
usually labeled AO, A1, and A2, or E1, E2, and E3.  You will need one to three
shorting jumpers.
 
The pins are arranged thusly         o   o   =  A2/E3
                                     o   o   =  A1/E2
                                     o   o   =  A0/E1

 Those are the SCSI ID pins.  No jumper blocks on any of the pins is ID 0.
Then by adding jumper blocks in combinations of from one to three of them
changes the ID from ID 0 (no pins covered by a jumper) to ID 7.
 
 
If you connect a

       nothing                  0
       A0/E1                    1
       A1/E2                    2
       A0/E1 & A1/E2            3
       A2/E3                    4
       A0/E1 & A2/E3            5
       A1/E2 & A2/E3            6
       A0/E1, A1/E2 & A2/E3     7
 
 
 
   The tough part for you, however, is the size of the jumper blocks you need
to cover those pins. It use to be that one size fit all.  You can buy them at
Radio Shack  (PN 276-1512A).   Then the industry came out with a miniature
version of a jumper block. They are a bear to find.  Washington Apple Pi has a
large supply of them which we use for our members for doing just what you are
trying to accomplish.  If you cannot find a source for them (try begging one or
two from a local dealer), I can send you some.  One will get you off ID 0 and
give you three different numbers.  Two will get you six different numbers and
all three covered gets you the seventh number.
