  I agree that "left" and "right" as used in the US don't mean much.
Both parties tolerate individual liberty only enough to get elected;
then both parties stomp all over your rights: the Democrats can't
keep their grubby paws out of my wallet, and the Republicans want to 
install video cameras in my bedroom and make sure I don't make any 
political statements they don't like.

  One day, people that support the principles of individual liberty
might actually make it to Congress. (The last time this happened was
1787 - since then, Americans have treated the Constitution as
only so much paper, to be ignored when it becomes inconvenient
to their desire to tax those rich bastards into oblivion or burn
those damn witches). To get a principled Congress today would of course 
require a general American population with principles, the probability 
of which I leave to the reader to determine.
