i know next to nothing about programming, but have gathered that in
system 6.01 a call for small icons (when in the standard file dialogue
box) --- this call is new to 6.01 --- is not "managed" well by the
manager, resulting in the problem you indicate. it is my understanding
that an upgrade is planned (or underway) that probably will correct
this. i have found this problem extremely annoying for the better part
of a year now, having chosen to sacrifice the speed for the manager's
capabilities. recently, however, i unexpectedly discovered a solution.
i installed kangaroo, and half expecting a further reduction in speed,
what i found was that the problem went away. in addition, i have gained
the additional functionality of kangaroo, with which i am quite
impressed. but the plot thickens. it turns out that this speed is
gained back only at the expense of any small system icons you may have
installed. like the manager, kangaroo was released before system
6.01; where the manager took a long time to process the call for small
icons, kangaroo appears not to recognize the call itself. seven hills
informs me that an upgrade also is planned (or underway) for kangaroo that
will resolve this. for now, i am sacrificing small system icons for
speed, as well as for kangaroo's many benefits (no contest). i
enthusiastically recommend kangaroo, especially if you are using the
manager with system 6.01. --robb booker
