Well, Apple didn't really follow any AT command set guidelines, even for
the time of the Apple modem 300 and 1200. Most will work, but some will
not.
ATZ actually just resets the modems to the last configuration set it W0.
AT&F resets the modem to factory defaults.
Most modems will accept that.
You might want to issue an AT&W0 (that's a zero, not an 'oh') after doing
the AT&F
