Annoying AppleTalk error

I made changes to my boot volume recently that result in the annoying
message,

"The selected AppleTalk connection
could not be found. Be sure it is
installed and the slot settings in the
 Control Panel are correct."

I do not use AppleTalk, and I have removed every file that I thought
would cause this message to disappear. I have also used the Installer
to try to remove several functions but the remove option is greyed out
even though I'm using it from a 3.5 drive. I reinstalled sys 6.0.1 and
now all of my icons have turned into documents. (pause, deep breath...)
What is happening here? How do I get my boot process and Finder back to
normal? Thanks for any help.
