The .zip extension is commonly used for files that are compacted with the
PKZIP archiver program for the PC.
 
You unpack it with a program called Angel, by Tony Marques. Ensure the
filename ends with .zip or .qwk, or Angel will not recognize it as an
archive.

Because I asked the sysop at caltech, Daniel Zimmerman (dmz@cco.caltech.edu),
to leave it in .zip format.
 
Here is an excerpt from the programs documentation, perhaps this will clear
up some of the confusion.
