Without referencing the original article, I believe he's referring to
various techniques for 'best fit', meaning how to 'best' fit a subset
of a given set into a limited amount of space, given certain constraints
on what goes where.  A good example of this would be techniques to fit
multiple instruments in DOC RAM for a mod player :)  I'm sure Ian will
chime in here...

If I'm wrong, I will surely be corrected rsn ;)
