I always thought the internal connector was identical to the one on the
back plane. The internal connector is a carry over from the original
Apple II I believe. I still have one of those joystick with the 16 pin
DIP connector somewhere in my folks basement. It doesn't connect too well
with my GS as none of the knockout ports in the back will let the plug go
through.
