I'll say you'd better start looking, and while you're at it,
starting backing up. The same thing happened to my old 80 megger,
the Seagate ST-296N. It all started harmless enough, then it got
really bad: sharp metal on metal grinding noise, spuddering, you-name-
it, the drive made it! Of course, being poor, young, and foolish,
I did not buy a new drive in time, nor did I make any backups. The
drive started to get really bad when it wouldn't start spinning on
a regular basis, at least not without a slight tap on the drive
case. I would recommend that you don't turn the drive off if it
is still going; powering on and off seemed to have killed off my
driver faster.

As far as I know, airport x-ray machines are harmless on HD, laptops,
and floppies. It will only harm photo negatives.
