I received the following re my question about genie from the net (edited
for brevity) This one was good because it actually shows a session.
He asked me to forward it on, so here it is.

Yes, you can telnet into GEnie. You pay an extra $2 per hour to do
it, though, because you wind up going through a SprintNet node, and
GEnie charges $2 extra per hour for SprintNet access.
Example of getting to GEnie from any Internet host: (if you
didn't
know already.)
example% telnet hermes.merit.edu Trying 35.1.48.168 ...
Connected
to hermes.merit.edu. Escape character is '^]'.
%Merit:Hermes (HME876:TN03:VT100:EDIT=MTS) %You have reached
MichNet, operated by Merit Network, Inc. %Enter a
destination, or
enter HELP for assistance.
Which Host?sprintnet-313171 %TN03:HME876-DT13:TE00 sprint
%Call connected U#=xxx99999,password
Also, for those who don't already know, it is possible to mail a genie
user by posting to
user@genie.guise.com
You can also send mail from genie to the internet, but I can't remember
offhand how it's done.
Good luck.
