Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  Isn't this how they all go???

Apple ][, Apple ][+, Apple //e, Apple //c, Apple //c+.

The GS as printed on the front panel is Apple IIGS, but what appears on 
the screen at boot time is Apple IIgs.
