System 6.0.1 problem?

Well, here's a new on on me.

I just acquired a large harddrive (140Meg).  I have it connected with a
Ramfast card and partitioned into 4 active volumes, each with the default
28k (I haven't figured out how to make use of the rest via an HFS volume).
I have 5Megs of memory on a GSRam+ and a ZipGS 8/64.  My Ramfast is ROM
version 2.01e.

The problem: deleting any files from the boot volume trashes the
directory.  Specifically, when I delete one file (including emptying the
trashcan) the next time I try to copy a file I get an error message
telling me there was a media failure and the disk may be damaged.  This
only occurs on the boot volume.  If I go through the same sequence on any
of the other volumes I get no errors.  I've tried booting with no
inits/DAs but that doesn't change anything.

To isolate the problem, I restored a backup first to volume 4 then booted
from a floppy and erased volume 1.  Next, I copied everything from volume
4 onto volume 1 and shift booted.  After this, I can delete, copy, or move
at will from volume 4 with no ill effects.  However, if I delete anything
from volume 1 I get the error as described above.

What am I missing?
