Flakey monitor

Last time I tried this, things got screwed up, so here I go again. I have a
problem with my monitor. It keeps getting brighter and brighter to the point
where the display becomes fuzzy and unreadable, even with the brightness
turned all the way down. Does anyone know what causes this?
