I had to replace the keyboard encoder.  Luckily my hunch was right.  The 
'a' key failed, but yet testing the keyboard electronics showed that the 
keyboard was ok.  I got the chip for about $20-30 from Alltech 
Electronics (they used to advertise in inCider -- I can't recall if they 
still advertise in II Alive).  Make sure you specify the model -- I did 
but I still accidentally got sent a IIc chip.  My IIe worked fine once I 
got the right one.
