uncompressing GNU-Zip files on a IIGS - how!?

I've found a lot of text files in archives with an extension of.gz and have
not been able to uncompress then with PMPZip. Does anyone know if there is
a program that will uncompress them on a IIGS? In something that I read,
I gather they can be uncompressed online, but the system I'm on doesn't do it
- only 'tar' compressed files. Is there something our system's operator
can add that will delete the need of doing it on my own computer?
Thanks for your help.
