It sounds like a problem with either the drive ribbon or the drive
belt.  If you care to disassemble it and remove the drive, make sure
that the drive ribbon is properly connected from the computer to the
back of the drive, and that the drive belt (located on the bottom) is
still intact.

PS: There is a problem with your shell environment.  All of you
backspaces show up as ^H's in your the message (I removed them.)
Perhaps an 'stty erase ^H' might help?
