GS Question #3: Mouse

I bought a used GS that was missing a mouse.
 
What Mac rodents will live in my GS with no problems?  Which won't?
 
What can go wrong with a mouse?  What should I check for if I buy one
used?
 
What is a reasonable price for an ADB mouse?  A good price?
 
What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of trackballs
compared to mice?
