A problem with System 6
Ok. A while back I posted that I had had a problem with System 6.
The only problem was that I could not repeat the problem in a
satisfactory manner so that I could point to something and say
"THIS is what is the matter." :)
Anyway, I've now got a couple of problems which I want to point
out about System 6.
Background:
My version of System 6 was downloaded from Apple's site during the
time when they had it posted there. This was the (as far as I know)
"official" release of System 6.
My system set-up is:
An Apple //gs
4 megs of ram
20meg Apple hard drive
1 3.5" drive
2 5.25" drives
1 CP/M card (Microsoft Softcard)
1 Printer card (Grappler)
1 5.25" drive card
1 Super Serial Card
1 Apple SCSI card
1 AE GS-RAM card
(The CP/M card, Printer card, and SSC card are disabled
unless I want to use them. They do not, as far as I know,
have anything to do with the problem. The problems were
there before I moved the card from the //e and they haven't
made the problems worse by being there.)
INITs
GUIMaster
AutoMenus
(The two inits above were put into the system to see what they
do. I took them back out. The same things happen. Put them
back in temporarily until I can figure out this problem. Nice
inits though. I'm thinking mighty hard about sending in my
shareware payment. :) )
Problems:
1. Loss of 5.25" drives.
A. When the system is booted, it looks for (and finds) my 5.25"
disk drives. After running a ProDos8 program though, System
6 looses them and I can not get them back until I either:
1) Run a ProDos16 program
2) Reboot
2. Icons garbage out.
A. After running a ProDos8 program (Chameleon) I found all of my
icons to have garbaged out. Rebooting did NOT help. Closing
the window and then re-opening it did NOT help. The only thing
which helped was to (under the Preferences...) select for the
//gs not to keep the finder information on the disk and
also selecting for the //gs to show all hidden files. I then
deleted all of the Finder.Data files from these corrupted folders.
Once this was done, the icons again showed up correctly.
3. Window size information lost.
A. This is an old problem which I never found out what the outcome
of this was. Basically, if you open a window and resize the
window via the expand-o-matic box, and then run an application;
then the expand-o-matic size becomes the default size.
4. Not keeping Finder info equals always seeing the same thing.
A. Another problem which cropped up when I turned off the saving of
Finder information to the disk. I found that the same windows
kept popping back up as open after exiting an application even
though those windows had been closed and others opened.
