VLB for serial, parallel etc. makes no sense. ISA is quite capable of handling
that.
VLB has the problem that it's not stable. It was never really defined, just
like ISA, especially not for the higher-speed ranges. Yes, I know about
VLB-II, but it doesn't change a thing :)
I think the "future" in PC bussystems will be a combination of PCI and
another, slower bussystem for slow cards. In the IBM world, that will
probably be PCI/ISA and later PCI/EISA, for Mac (based on 601, that is)
Apple apparently plans PCI/NuBus, and I don't know if Alphas will
have PCI only or something else too.
PCI has the advantage of being really defined, and that very detailed.
There are no questions open, licensing is dirt cheap, and everyone who
wants to can sit in on the now-open gremium on PCI. There will be
other bussystems in the future, but for now, VLB is already dead
and PCI will take over.
Enough of this. Back to our scheduled Apple // discussions, please :)
