Looking for UUCP & BBS software
I'm in the process of looking for a way to retain my access to the
Internet and I've found a local BBS that offers a polling service for
a fairly reasonable fee. To access this service, I need a program to
download all of the info using the UUCP 'G' Protocol with 12, 14, or
16 bit compression. Is there such a beast available for the GS or
(preferably) the //e? I have a //e that I'm not currently using that
would make a great BBS machine, but if I need to upgrade it to a GS to
run the software, that's OK too.
If there isn't any software available for the GS, does anyone know of
any Mac solutions? I also have a Mac SE that I picked up cheap so I
could get into programming on that platform as well, and it could at
least be used to do the polling. If I can't get a ready-made package,
can anyone point me towards the appropriate documentation for me to
put something together myself? How hard would this be? I am an
experienced programmer.
Also, I figure that I can help cover the expense of using this service
by setting up a local Apple II BBS (as there are none in the area, to
my knowledge). I haven't been keeping up with the state-of-the-art
in BBS systems for the GS, so I'd appreciate any suggestions and
opinions on what's out there. Please include the cost and how to
obtain the package, if you know.
Oh, and please reply by email. I am currently accessing my old
university account by long-distance telephone, so I don't want to
spend a lot of extra time scanning the newsgroups. I will post a
summary if I get any requests. Please don't worry about duplications;
I want to hear from as many people as possible.
