I think Phil may have been mistaken.

The 6.0.1 Installer's "Easy Update" option will install the AppleTalk
software if it finds any of the files which are normally only used
with AppleTalk.  The most likely culprit is the LaserWriter driver.

Under 6.0, you could use the LaserWriter driver as a "Direct Connect"
printer, to create PostScript files.  If you had installed the
LaserWriter driver onto your system disk, then the 6.0.1 Installer
would notice it and assume you want all of the AppleTalk software as
well.
