I have had similar problems with my ROM 01 GS, Apple HS SCSI card, and
Chinook CT-100 hard drive. I've been able to "solve" the problem by
allowing the drive to spin up a long time (about 5 minutes) before turning
the computer on and/or turning the computer off and on several times. My
guess is that it's a spin-up problem, as it only happens when I turn my
computer on after it's been off (which, except for the recent thunderstorms
rolling across the Midwest, happens only about 2 or 3 times a year).
What I mean is, it doesn't happen on a reboot -- only upon initial
power-up. So try that. Turn the hard drive on and wait five minutes
before turning on the computer. If that doesn't work, cycle the power
until it boots. Mine sometimes requires 4 or 5 cycles.
