//c help wanted

I've inherited a //c, with lots of software, no manuals, a spare
monitor that doesn't work (I can't figure out why), and I don't
know a thing about it. I thought I would use it as a dumb term, and
just generally hack around with it. After all, it doesn't appear to
be worth much, so there's no real harm if I break it.

now, the problem:

I know a //c can use a modem and dial up a Unix system, cause I watched
someone do it. This person gave me a copy of the modem program he was
using to see if it would work n my computer.

the problem is, the computer steadfastly refuses to acknowledge that
the disk is in the drive. I'm pretty sure that the disk is ok, so I'm
wondering, is it that the computer is too old to recognize the program?
If so, does that mean I am out of luck, or are there modems and programs
that will run on a //c that old?

this //c was purchased in '84 or '85, if that helps.

thanks for any help :)
