AOL -used- to be connected via UUCP. Now (and for some months now)
they have a SCO machine running some measure of internetworkable
software which can be pinged and telnetted to just fine.
AOL charges by the hour for all connection time, except those in
free areas. I can assure you that mail is NOT free on AOL.
