Every time I've had a bizarre problem with Pointless (and there have been
a few) I have always found it to be caused by a corrupted font.  Searching
through 174 might be time consuming but I'll wager that's where the
problem lies.
 
PS.  It might be beneficial to others if we each post a note regarding
font files we've found bad.
