This might be related it might be not.  Last year I had a similar problem
with the font menus.  I don't have Pointless but the symtoms are the same 
as you described.  After weeks of frustration I managed to narrow it down
to a particular font (Florence 12, 24).  When I examined the font info I
realized it had garbled text for the font ID.  So I chose an arbitrarily
high number and vala! no more crashes!  BTW: I had 248 fonts to narrow
down... ACK!  I know there is a program out now that checks for proper
font IDs and font ID conflicts.  If I only had that last year... sigh.
I don't remeber the name of the program off hand but perhaps if some here
knows...
