*** Other programs I tested:

    - Quickie 3.0 by Vitesse. I think the limits are 900x900 pixels.
      After loading and discarding some large files it crashes
      sometimes on my system (I have the impression, that 2.0 was
      more stable...) but I use it quite often to create large pics.

    - BeagleDraw. Yes, this oldie is really very useful! Although it's
      a DRAWING PROGRAM, you can load bitmaps and 'glue' them together.
      Seems to be very stable.
