Ok, this question has popped up so often it should be printed in big bold
letters on the System 6 startup screen. :)

Fron the "General" Control panel (or maybe the keyboard; I only ran into this
problem once), set Keyboard translation to NORMAL. If translation's OFF, the
computer ignores whether the option key is held down or not when pressing
keys on the keyboard.

Hopefully, Apple will put some sort of warning dialog up in that CDev telling
users exactly what the purpose of the normal/off translation's all about!
