I haven't really explored this at length, but the one time I did, it
didn't work.

This probably means that you haven't set up the Mac side of things
properly (see below)

If you are the only one who is going to be using the machines, just set
the sharing for the Mac hard drive icon and "all folders enclosed".  Make
sure you set up all the options so that the networkee ( :)  can do them.

I once talked to an Apple employee who came out to a school where I had a
similar setup.  He said that while Apple had heard of people using serial
cables for networking, he didn't recommend it.  I don't think I would
either, but it does work.

On ftp.apple.com there is an archive called AppleShare Apple II Setup. 
Try that, and let us know how it goes.
