Fred, I'd be willing to be a guinea pig for you...I've got a HP Laserjet IIp
with the HP ADOBE Postscript cartridge.
 
You are right in assuming that it is the interpreter rather than the printer,
though. I had this same problem with a clone postscript cartridge. I ended up
solving it in my case by getting a REAL Adobe Postscript...and it cost a lot
too, but I've been most happy about it ever since.
