VGA.  Those methods are *completely* compatible.
Search this newsgroup and you'll find the known-good solution(s).
Actually, one approach has proven to deliver a high-quality result,
but it costs $100+, which is pretty near what a VGA card would have
to cost.

You are correct that many "scan converters" don't work well with
the IIgs--which is why the research that's been done is so valuable.
