I've never used PhoneNet, just LocalTalk cabling. I don't know if that
applies, but I've never had a 'disconnect'. It was always there when I
was connected until I disconnected.

Not going to happen. GS/OS doesn't have any built-in file sharing.

I've used both a Shiva Fastpath and Apple's software for connecting
Localtalk/Ethernet connections and Apple's software was more
transparent. It's just a control panel and I believe I was last running
it on my Quadra 650. And I know I used to use a Laserwriter IIg from my
GS, but I've never had a real running GS since I got a LW 12/640 so I
haven't tried it with that.

If I had the room to set up my GS again, which I should do, it would be
localtalked to the Quadra 650 and then that's connected to my Ethernet
network. But Mac OS 8.1 and Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't really like to
talk to each other that well.
