Folks,
Pardon me if I use this group as a polling place for potential kit
builders. I think this community might be interested in some of the
tradeoffs I have to make in putting together the rev0 replica kit and
also be interested in providing some input.
I'm working on procuring the parts for the next lot of Apple II rev 0
replica kits. One thing I'm having trouble deciding is whether to go
with machined sockets (better quality, much more expensive) or solder
tail sockets ( less expensive). Solder tail sockets would be more
authentic, as Apple used them. However, we all know about the issues
that authentic motherboards have with intermittent connections, which,
in my opinion, is at least partly due to the socket choice that Apple
made..
One possibility would be to offer the option to the buyer, with a
$50.00 lower price for purchasing a kit with solder tail sockets
($349 vrs $395) . However given the low number of kits expected to be
sold, I'm not real excited about stocking sockets for two different
grade kits.
My personal preference is leaning toward to the machined sockets,
because I would prefer potentially better reliability over the cost
savings and authenticity. However there may be folks out there that
would prefer a more authentic kit and the $50 may be enough of a
difference between buying the kit and not buying it.
If you don't know the difference, each type can be plainly be seen in
this comparative view of the GAME I/O sockets (replica has machined
socket).

What do you think?
Would the lower price make a difference to you purchasing or not?
Would the more authentic solder tail sockets make a difference to you?
Would the better quality machined sockets make a difference to you?
Thanks and regards,
