Re: Copying a IIGS volume on a Zip Disk to a PC

I would appreciate a steer in the right direction.

As I still don't have a SCSI card yet (except the 'funny' CMS one that came with my GS), I'm trying to find a way to copy several 32 meg volumes (that I saved 10 or 15 years ago) from Zip disks to my PC. Perhaps there I could use Ciderpress to look and see what files/programs I have on these volumes.

There are 6 volumes, 32 megs each, on two Zip disks. I copied them there using a Ramfast (when I had one).

Now, if I insert one of the disks in a Zip drive connected to my WinXP PC, it says the disk is unformatted and offers to format it for me (of course).

What happens if you simply decline the offer, then use CiderPress to
open the volume?

I'm familiar with Macs offering to format unrecognized volumes, but
usually XP just sits there until you try to do something with it.

Perhaps its the Zip driver that's making all the fuss. Is is connected
via IDE, SCSI, or parallel port. (If it's parallel port, you are stuck
with the Zip driver.)

Thank you, Michael.

I suspect you are correct that it is the lack of a Zip driver for Apple files on a PC that is the problem. It is connected to my PC via parallel port.

I tried setting it up, declining the format, then opening CiderPress to go looking for it, but it couldn't see anything on the Zip drive.

I do have SCSI Zip drives, and a PCI SCSI card, but I'm reluctant to install it in my PC for just this one exercise. My motto is "Don't mess with a working PC unless you've GOT to!".

I'll just keep looking for a good SCSI card for my IIGS.
