Did it open it successfully and see nothing, or did it say "I don't see any
Apple II stuff here"?

Did you open it by physical drive number or logical drive letter?  Sometimes
you have a choice, and the former is generally better.  ("Open Volume" and
disk tools like Volume Copier give you a choice.)

Looks like they have SCSI-to-USB adapters now:

I haven't tried one, but it should let you connect the SCSI drive without
cracking the PC case.  Looks like a high-density SCSI connector on the
model above, so you may need to throw another adapter in the middle.
