and would be useful to a beginner (it would certainly reveal errors
in indentation).

I'm particularly interested in how easy it is to use binary files,
especially reading and writing arbitrary length chunks at arbitrary
byte positions, something that Applesoft (actually BASIC.SYSTEM) does
very easily.
