Wasn't cassette Applesoft available BEFORE the ProgAid chip?

Possibly, but I thought the Programmer's Aid ROM came right out
of the Red Book, plus a few things.


I misunderstood you. Ι thought you meant that cassette AS makes calls
into that ROM. It's entirely possible that the routines are the same, I
never checked that.
