The last thing I did before both cards stopped working was plug in a
joystick which I'd tried to repair by putting a new plug on - I
haven't been game to try the joystick in anything else but I certainly
wouldn't rule out some short circuits or crossed wires in my repair
job.

There was no obvious noise or smoke when the cards breathed their last.
