Well, I would consider those different classes of program. I use ECP8 as well for many file-oriented tasks, but prefer ProSEL as a program selector.
Why, ecp8 can launch system files, basic programs, binary files, extrinsic files and script files. It has a common location for external commands and scripts and is very well coded. If you need an easy launch method there are apple key macros or the afore mentioned scripts. There is also a set of patches which enhances it's functionality.
The only times I ever needed a menu based launcher, I used the one in P8. I'm not saying that ProSEL should not be used. For some folks who have a few important applications to use with very little programming or maintenance requirements, ProSEL is probably the choice for them. For me, the selector is just another software layer I would have to go through to get to what I want to work with.
CLI tools are certainly a lot easier than CAT Doctor or Copy II if you just want to poke a couple of files around.
But with the cli and scripts or custom commands one can do a whole lot more than just poking a couple of files around. Granted it requires a bit of work on the user to ensure the proper commands exist and they know how to use them but this applies to other programs as well.
As I said, it's a matter of taste. Cheers, Mike T
