I recently wanted to get a new domain name, myself, as my old one

So there's no "grace period" for slightly delayed renewal, or "wait
before changing hands" period?

Imagine if you could do that with telephone numbers!

OMG, Isn't that what GoDaddy.com is all about? Bidding on domain
names that are about to expire (but may not)..
Also, when I signed up for my domain name, it showed me all the other
apple2e domains (.com, .net, etc) that exist with the option, for
$18.95, to have them try and grab it for you when/if it does expire.

I can understand grabbing a domain name that expires, but to grab it
and then put up a lame-o cloned search portal in the hopes of making a
profit.. ugh.. From what I understand, people buy the names because
they have traffic, so they are trying to make a buck on AdSense (or
something similar).. As usual, it's all about making money..

Actually, it's like having your mortgage check arrive one second
after midnight of the due date and having your house repossessed
and sold to someone else in five minutes, without any notification!

Domains are "homes", and their ownership should not be transferred
on a "default" without some process that takes at least a month,
with plenty of opportunities to fix any problems. Continuity is
important.
