AFAIK Apple made at least two different RAM cards for the GS.
One with a maximum of 1 MB and one with 4 MB. See here:

The standard 1MB-card can only be upgraded with some major surgery.

I would recommend to either upgrade the card to 1 MB or getting
another (possibly bigger) card. The 1 MB cards are usually dirt cheap.
With 2,25 MB you can comfortably run most applications, anyway.

If you want to use a large ramdisk or need more RAM you should
get a 4MB card. Then you'll have 5,25MB in the ROM03 which
surely is enough for pretty much anything.
