The firmware typically provides a SmartPort interface for ProDOS and
Pascal, and in the case of the Apple card (and compatibles) also
provides a patch to make it useable under DOS 3.3. Doing an IN#x from
DOS will 'connect' the memory card as DOS 3.3 volume in that slot.

The hardware interface provides a set of address registers and a data
register. When the data register is read or written, the address
register(s) are automatically incremented to the next address.

In this way, the card is much like a slinky on stairs; you can
position it to start where you like and it will automatically march
down.
