I'd suggest that you check out the Contiki sources first and contnue
to argue then  - or even better just go ahead and implement it ;-)

Fair enough.

I didn't mean to suggest that you didn't know the difference, but
was just spelling out why I would expect it to be easier.  I know
almost nothing about the Contiki environment, particularly as regards
the file system.

My hope was to get a few more details on what limitation (that I clearly
don't know about) stands in the way.
