Greg, thanks for your detailed note.  You confirmed my suspicions.

I tried DiskDup and DiskDupPro and did NOT obtain any better results.
My process was to run DiskDup, insert a GSOS 6 Master Install disk to
take an image of it, then dump the image to a known good 800k floppy
(not HD).   Then this floppy goes into the IIgs and I use Disk Copy 7.3
to try to verify the files and/or the entire disk.   In all tests (with
or without DiskDup), I get I/O errors, though none when the disk is
freshly formatted.

The IIgs drives are tested / known good.   The Mac drive works fine at
1.44mb Mac / PC formats.

I have no issues doing the same tests from my earlier drive / OS 7.5
combo.

Quite a frustrating and glaring oversight on Apple's part.

So would you suggest trying to find a different drive at this point?
