Yep, 1)'s my first idea. The only snag is that inverse characters
come in contact with the inverse "major" grid lines, and so tend
to "attach" themselves, which is unattractive.

There's always a simple solution, like surrounding the numbers with
asterisks or periods or some other character that "shades" the cell.

The current screen layout is only two lines per grid line (2x9=18),
so an inverse character is always going to contact an adjacent
inverse "line".

My real issue is that I don't see the purpose, or the purpose is
at odds with our original design intent.

well, that is very fair. As a prover, this program more than meets the
requirements, and very ellegantly for that matter. I can understand
why you wouldn't want to duplicate features of other suducko solver
programs out there, too much UI, and a total pain to write in basic.

I wouldn't mind rewriting the ui to be fancier, but honestly I have
other projects backlogged that I promised myself to work on first (e.g.
get a2gameserver to work properly for //e's, rewrite my raycaster
engine for double-hires and fix bugs in it, etc)

If you do get a chance, go for it! It's not like we're drowning in
new software for the Apple II. ;-)
